Speaker 1 00:00:02 Welcome to another episode of Moving to Maryland. Today we're gonna talk about a neighborhood, Gilford that is often lumped together when people are thinking about the area, but where Gilford Homeland, Roland Park is. And Megan, where would you say, uh, Gilford is? Gilford is located,
Speaker 2 00:00:17 So Gilford, it's about like 10 minutes north of Baltimore City, like the downtown inner Harbor. Um, but it's very suburban, like, um, you know, it's very residential and it's surrounded by a couple different neighborhoods. You got Tuscany, kit, Tuscany, Canterbury, Charles Village Waverly, and it's just about south of Roland Park. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1 00:00:36 <affirmative>. Caitlin, you grew up around there? Uh,
Speaker 2 00:00:39 Yeah. My, my grandmother used to live right near there, and we would walk through Sherwood Gardens and the neighborhood just for fun to look at the houses, and it's really an incredible neighborhood because you have the Gilford Mansion, which was built in 1850, and then Sherwood Gardens, which is like a six acre, um, tulip garden. Yeah. Um, right in the center of the neighborhood. And, um, if you have not been there, like when the tulips are blooming, you should go. Yeah. Because it's very, it's just beautiful. It is stunning. It's a huge training.
Speaker 1 00:01:11 It's a centerpiece of the community. I know Trusa, you're a big, uh, arch, you know, historical architecture fan. What would you say about the Gilford architecture?
Speaker 3 00:01:18 Oh, it's, in my opinion, some of the best in the city. Um, it's historic number one. So every house is completely unique. No two are the same. They're that type of craftsmanship you'll never find again. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, you know, those artisans don't even exist anymore. Right. Um, houses are large and just, um, like a little bit taken a step back in time where things were very much grandiose. Um, some of the houses have been renovated with new kitchens, new bathrooms. A lot of them have not, again, it's like a generational thing. So people move into these houses and a lot of them need work. So one family will live there for X number of years and maybe put in Central Air, redo a kitchen. The next family will come in and redo all the windows. So there are homes that sort of, you know, grow with each family that lives there. And the history continues.
Speaker 1 00:02:09 Big homes, mansion, like estates, um, big, big lots. Uh, Megan, you and I were talking about the hoa. Mm-hmm. Uh, Gilford. That is very restrictive in the way, you know, when trusts is talking about, like, going back in time, it's because it's HOA is really strict, isn't it?
Speaker 2 00:02:23 Yeah. I mean, it's, it's there to, there's certain architectural restrictions on the roof, windows, the exterior, um, appearance of it just to maintain, excuse me, that, uh, like architectural integrity of the community that's been there. So,
Speaker 1 00:02:38 So if you're hitting, uh, downtown or, uh, going north of the city, um, not, not getting around the city, what are the best ways to get in and out of, uh, that area?
Speaker 2 00:02:49 I mean, mainly because of its very central location, uh, you're really taking the city streets, um, to go in between, especially between Inner Harbor downtown versus Gilford, but you also have good access to 83, and you take 83 to get 6 95, and then you're only 10 minutes or 15 minutes from Penn Station, which is good for anybody who has to take a transit to
Speaker 3 00:03:09 Work. And you're like 10 minutes south of Towson.
Speaker 2 00:03:12 Yeah, exactly. So it's
Speaker 3 00:03:13 Really easy to get to Towson great,
Speaker 1 00:03:15 Great for shopping and all the amenities and things like that. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, the, um, I mean, you, you couldn't describe Gilford if you were talking about the, uh, the neighborly field and the residents, but it's, you know, um, the, the prices, you know, range, uh, upwards of 3 million down into the 500 s. Um, so it's a very affluent community. It is. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> and, uh, so you have a lot of doctors, you have a lot of professionals, you have attorneys and people that work downtown, but want that suburban living that's just 10 minutes away, you know, mostly. Yeah. But I mean, you have a, certainly a mix of people that live there, but it's, it's, it's one of the more expensive neighborhoods, wouldn't you say
Speaker 3 00:03:50 It is. And it's very serene there. So if you, you know, when some peace and quiet, you're gonna get that there, you know, and it's not a lot of foot traffic. There's not a lot of traffic. If you don't live in Guilford, you're not going through the neighborhood to get somewhere. It's more of a destination neighborhood. Right. So if you wanted, I've seen some privacy, um, for your family and to be able to go outside and relax and not have, uh, you know, a lot of passerbys, um, it's Gilford provides that
Speaker 1 00:04:19 For you. Yeah. Not, not a lot of people walking through the neighborhood. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yeah. Now, uh, Caitlin, uh, Gilford touches, uh, different neighborhoods that, that have restaurants. You have Charles Village, and you know, there, there's definitely, uh, restaurants around and close by, but when, when you say it's more of a place that, um, you're, you're gonna drive to places, uh, drive to your favorite restaurants.
Speaker 2 00:04:41 Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you're gonna be driving to restaurants, but there are lots of really fantastic options. Just a very short drive away. You've got Petite Louise and Johnny's, um, you've got, um, everything in Charles Village in Hamden. La Gutar is a personal favorite for me, but, you know, I'm biased <laugh>. Um, yeah, tons, tons of options. And Towson as well has lots of really great options for dining. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 00:05:08 Yeah. No, your favorite
Speaker 2 00:05:10 What Miss Shirley's? Yeah, <laugh> <laugh>. I'm a breakfast, uh, junkie, so, yes.
Speaker 1 00:05:15 So, you know, uh, as you get into neighborhoods like Gilford Homeland and Roland Park, you, you, you, you see more green space, you see more trees and say some of the, um, you know, the harbor neighborhoods, you know, where, where, um, being by like a Patterson Park or something like that. So I know we talked about Shorewood Gardens, but, um, what are some other green spaces in, um, that area?
Speaker 2 00:05:36 You have? There's a little, uh, reservoir, um, that's inside of the neighborhood, which is a, has a walking path around it. It's great if you like to run. Um, and the whole neighborhood in general, right, is basically green space. I mean, like, there are trees everywhere. Everything's beautifully landscaped, like mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yeah. There's, there is a lot of, um, greenery to see. And you're also very quick, like very short distance from Wyman Park. Um, so if you wanted to go elsewhere mm-hmm. <affirmative>, you know, and kind of venture outside of the neighborhood in Lake Roland. Exactly, yeah. In Lake Roland. Yep. Yep.
Speaker 1 00:06:08 So, um, there's definitely a neighborhood vibe there. Uh, and, and we have talked about in the past, like how the hoa, um, just creates a, a, a good community involvement. When you said,
Speaker 2 00:06:18 When you said, yeah, I think, um, we were talking about this before, but I think when people go to purchase a home in Gilford, they're there to live there. Like, you're not there to really, you have to drive to a restaurant. Again, there's not many foot traffic, so you're there to raise a family, be surrounded by your neighbors, and have that more of a community feel, um, within that neighborhood.
Speaker 1 00:06:39 And there's a, you know, generational pass down of houses and stuff. So you have some longtime families that, that have lived there through multi-generations. Um, I think at Gilford is a place, you know, um, where you get that you can get a state living that you would find maybe out in, um, the Valley or, um, you know, owns Mills or somewhere outside of the beltway in the city. Um, because you want to be in the city, you want to, you want to be 10 minutes away, not half an hour away, right? Yeah. Yeah. Very convenient. Um, expensive.
Speaker 3 00:07:09 Well, not to mention the schools that are all nearby Gilford, within a few minutes, you have great elementary schools, middle schools, high schools, universities, all very convenient.
Speaker 1 00:07:20 Yeah, I think, yeah. Yeah. I think you're gonna find a lot of, uh, employees of those places that live in that area,
Speaker 2 00:07:25 Probably. Right? Definitely. Absolutely.
Speaker 1 00:07:27 Yeah. So let's talk about real estate. Let's talk about the real estate options and choices, which, uh, are very unique, right?
Speaker 2 00:07:34 Yeah. I think for me, like the main architectural like style there that I love is the Georgian style, which it almost like from the front, you know, it's very simplistic mm-hmm. <affirmative>, but when you walk inside some of these homes, oh my God, they're grand entrances, huge ceilings, beautiful custom molding, trim, gorgeous wood staircase. Like, it's just, ugh. It's amazing. <laugh>.
Speaker 3 00:08:00 Yeah, it is. It takes you back in time. You know, the, the, um, designs that were used were, you know, they were, it was from a different time, so people lived differently then. Very elegant. Very elegant. Yep. Very,
Speaker 2 00:08:12 The attention to detail. Yeah. Yep. It's,
Speaker 3 00:08:16 Yeah. Um, uh, the way Gilford is think that it's really flat in a lot of areas, but it's also has a lot of hills. Um, I think I had mentioned this to Ron one day about this house, but I went to a party, or when I got to the house, I thought, wow, this is one of the more modest homes here. And it was all ground level with the front door of the house, which is kind of unusual. Usually they have really grand entrances, right? Then after you entered the home, after the first part of the floor plan, the entire back of the house just dropped down into this magnificent back portion of the home where there were tennis courts and inground pools and giant patio for outdoor dining and just incredible. And they're the kinds of things that you will find in Gilford, but you won't find in any other city neighborhood, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 00:09:05 Yeah. So, Caitlin, Megan Trusa and I are all real estate agents with the greatest moves team at Remax Advantage Realty.
