Speaker 2 00:00:03 Hey guys, welcome to another episode of Moving to Maryland Today. I'm here with Rush me, Nick, and Caitlin, and today we're gonna talk about our favorite restaurants in Canton. How's it going, guys? Doing great.
Speaker 3 00:00:12 Hey, it's going great.
Speaker 2 00:00:14 Nick, you lived in Canton for a long time. Oh yeah. What's your favorite?
Speaker 1 00:00:18 That's kind of a loaded question. I mean, um, you know, cuisine wise, you know, you could say, what's your favorite pizza place? It's Verde. I mean, that's probably like my go-to restaurant in Canton. If people are coming into town, it's always Verde. I mean, it's Neapolitan style. Pizzas
Speaker 2 00:00:34 So different. We love it. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1 00:00:35 <affirmative> everything you can't go wrong with. Just like throwing a dart at the menu and then whatever you pick is gonna be good.
Speaker 2 00:00:42 <laugh>, I should try that one. You should. How about you, Caitlin?
Speaker 4 00:00:46 I really love Neha. Um, that new Chinese restaurant that opened probably what, almost two years ago now. Uh, but they're really, really excellent food, but a more casual dining atmosphere. It's really, really good.
Speaker 2 00:01:00 What about you, Russ?
Speaker 3 00:01:01 My favorite restaurant is El Buffalos. Oh, I love Taco Tuesday. <laugh>. We have tequila and tacos that are just exquisite.
Speaker 2 00:01:10 I tell you, I went there for lunch and, uh, you know, I know Dominic, uh, through his other place we're on Refin, which is on the waterfront over there, uh, at the pool. And, um, but I'd never been to El Buffalo. Like it was just one of those places. I had no idea how good the food was there. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> very good. So I live in Canton and we, like, last night we went to Gunther and Company, which is technically in Brewers Hill, but it's a block over. And uh, I know we'd all agree. That's like really one of my favorite restaurants in all of the city. Um, well, I, I mean, it's one of my favorite restaurants. I know. It's probably one of
Speaker 4 00:01:41 Yours too. Yeah, definitely one of my favorites. Shout out to Nancy and Jerry, who are always killing it. <laugh>. Yeah. <laugh>.
Speaker 2 00:01:48 Yeah. I would say the same thing. Um, the, um, but so we also, uh, because of the location, uh, and because of being able to get, get to it on the Promenade, uh, Bayside Cantina used to be the Bay Cafe, which a lot of us, I, I found Canton through the Bay, uh, uh, through Bay Cafe. We go there at least now that the weather's breaking, I mean, we'll, we'll be there two or three nights a week. We can be, we can walk there in the promenade. The food's great. The atmosphere is great. Indoor outdoors. The, the staff is phenomenal. Uh, shout out to Carlos. Um, <laugh>,
Speaker 1 00:02:21 Everybody's getting
Speaker 4 00:02:23 Shots at Yeah,
Speaker 2 00:02:24 But there's, uh, there's, uh, we were just talking about a restaurant just outside of Canton, Sally o's
Speaker 4 00:02:29 Oh, yeah. Sally O's is so good. The Smash Burger is like one of my favorite things in the entire world to eat. Um, that might be like one of my, um, death row, like Meal Fix <laugh>. Yeah. Honestly, that Smash Burger,
Speaker 1 00:02:44 Jess, who's the chef there? I mean, the best way I can describe her food is it's funky. It's like combinations of things that you never would really expect. Like last time I was there they had, um, french onion ravioli, so like ravioli, like stuff with like French. Oh, wow. They had a, which my favorite thing was a is a tta stuff with crab cake. Like, everything that she does is funky, but it is all delicious
Speaker 2 00:03:07 Pork keta stuff with crab cake. Yeah. I had a po Keta at Gunther last night. I've never had a Po
Speaker 1 00:03:11 Keta before, so I made, I made that for Easter. Oh, wow. I, I ate it and I said I wanted to do it, and I remade it for Easter. Ugh.
Speaker 2 00:03:18 Wow.
Speaker 1 00:03:18 Yeah, it's awesome. She's, she has her chops. I I am forever a fan of hers, so.
Speaker 4 00:03:23 And the interior design styling of SAOs is like very, it's very cool. Yeah. Too, like it's very hip
Speaker 2 00:03:31 <laugh>. Uh, so, uh, that used to be The Laughing Pint, which was a bar. They did a little bit of food. Uh, but it was, I remember in the city paper it was either number one or number two of like one of the coolest bars in the city. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, which is not that far from the Venice, which is kind of like a cool basement.
Speaker 1 00:03:48 One of the, one of the oldest bars in the city still operating Venice Tavern <laugh>. Yeah. Really? Which is crazy. Uh,
Speaker 4 00:03:53 Wow, I didn't know that. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>.
Speaker 2 00:03:54 Okay, so there's, there, there's a range of cuisine, a a range of style. There's not really fine dining though, I mean mm-hmm. <affirmative>, what do you think the closest to fine dining in Canton?
Speaker 1 00:04:04 Well, the Gunther Yeah. You also have of Love and Regret, which has also really elevated their food is also really great. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Um, and then you have probably like old, older Canton Staples, like mama's on the half shell. But the one thing, Canton might not be known for her fine dining, but you do have tons of cuisine options there. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, which is what I really like about dining in Canton. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, because you can have American bar food. You do have Latin inspired, you know, Mexican cuisines. There's, um, you know, Vietnamese, there's
Speaker 2 00:04:35 On Eastern Avenue, I think people forget about all of the great spots on Eastern Avenue. Consider that. Like Highland Town, Matthews Pizza.
Speaker 4 00:04:42 Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Oh my gosh. Matthews Pizza. Yeah. <laugh>. I love Matthews Pizza so much. No.
Speaker 2 00:04:48 Matthews Pizza are like hotdog. I forget how much I like hotdogs. I eat a hotdog, eat another hot dog. Yeah. And then
Speaker 1 00:04:54 <laugh> five or five or six later you're like, Ugh.
Speaker 2 00:04:56 Well, Matthews Pizza, once you get, uh, taste of a Matthews Pizza, then you're like, I got, I need more of
Speaker 4 00:05:02 That. Have you ever gotten Matthews Pizza delivery? Oh
Speaker 2 00:05:05 Yeah. We get
Speaker 4 00:05:05 It all the time. You know, they do, like, between the paper plates. The first time I saw it I was like, what is this? And then I opened it up and I ate it, and I was like, ah, I'm so sorry that I judged you. I can't believe I did that. It was delicious. Was so good. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:05:18 Uh, they're sliders are like phenomenal, just sloppy and good. And the, the other thing is like the fa casual options. There's like the longtime favorite Tuty Gies. Um, you, you got pizza and wings such as part of Nacho Mamas. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, um, you got like, which is just across the street into Brewers Hill, uh, pasta Misa. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, uh, five guys. I mean, you got some really good choices. What, two blocks away? Deep Pasqua, right?
Speaker 4 00:05:44 Yeah. I was gonna say, if we're gonna go Brewers Hill, you have to talk about Deep Pasquale, the Butchers Hill Cheese Steak, I swear to you. <laugh> <laugh>. I love it.
Speaker 2 00:05:53 <laugh>. Well, a lot of us actually, like I found when I found Canton, it was through the Bay Cafe in Canton Square. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. So you have the staples that have been there. Mama's in the half shell. I know you like Rush. Mm, yes. Um, the, uh, nacho Mamas, which interestingly enough, uh, where Nacho Mamas opened, uh, it was a, um, pizza Togo's, uh, uh, from, um, ocean City. Is
Speaker 1 00:06:18 That interesting? I guess.
Speaker 2 00:06:19 Yeah. Pizza, pizza two goes. And he, he started, uh, too early. I think it was like 19 92, 19 93 maybe. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And it just didn't catch on. Like Canton hadn't quite got there yet. And then s Scny came into town and had this, you know, Irish guy, you know, Mexican food place. Like a crazy idea. And he was such a character and we, we all miss him. It's really, hasn't been the same without, it's still really good. Um, and then he, you know, he got real involved in the community. He would give, uh, he, he did, uh, pizza night at, at, uh, believing Tomorrow, which is, uh, uh, you know, housing for people with kids at the, at the hospital. And then just, you know, not everybody's heard of Nacho Mamas,
Speaker 4 00:06:58 Right? Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yeah. Margarita. The hubcap. Hubcap, yeah. Hubcap, margaritas,
Speaker 1 00:07:01 Elvis Decor.
Speaker 4 00:07:02 That's the thing. Yeah.
Speaker 2 00:07:03 So I moved here in 95, right when that was like developing. Mm-hmm. And then it wasn't, it might have been like five or 10 years later that they opened, um, their, their, their corner spot. Um,
Speaker 4 00:07:13 God Mama's on the hospital. On the hospital. Yeah. I forget that.
Speaker 2 00:07:16 Um, you know, um, which are both two staples. Yeah.
Speaker 4 00:07:21 Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. And I feel like the CCAs in Canton Square is kind of a staple there too.
Speaker 2 00:07:26 It, it, it hasn't been there, uh, since like 95. It's been, it's been there a while. Yeah. And I, every, I would say 95% of the time I take my son to the playground tips. Keep Park where you go to, to Vacca, that's our spot.
Speaker 4 00:07:39 Mm-hmm. <affirmative> cla for their Good Wings.
Speaker 1 00:07:42 <laugh>. Yeah. Claudes for the younger, for the younger folks. Dollar Beer Night, <laugh> at Claudes on Thursdays.
Speaker 2 00:07:49 I mean, you can't forget Kissling and Wings. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1 00:07:51 <affirmative>. Kissling says the Best Wings. There's the best way to describe a food. And Canton is like, you can't go a block without a neighborhood corner spot. So, you know, where I lived, the spot that was closest to me was, was Faux Back. It's a Vietnamese place run by a family. Mom cooks, the kids are in the front. They have fu they have all these Vietnamese classics and food that I had never tried before. And it became, you know, a place that I would eat like once or twice a week. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Cause it was literally just down the block and everything I had there was just fantastic
Speaker 2 00:08:23 Samos and Canton Crossing. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, which is, you know, on, on the edge of Canton. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, uh, awesome Greek food. If you've ever been to the Samos in Greek town, the owner was at, at the Grill every time you went in there. And the food was just so good. And then they opened that location in Canton Crossing. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, technically Brewers Hill, but, but, but close. Um, what are some other, uh, spots that, that there are so many really interesting small spots. Uh, any others that you guys can think
Speaker 1 00:08:48 Of? Like Hidden Gems. Hidden Gems? How much time do you have?
Speaker 2 00:08:51 Well just, just lay 'em out there.
Speaker 1 00:08:53 So if you're an early bird, simply Maries for breakfast, uh, they're only open Thursday through Sunday. Uh, she's awesome. Great breakfast food. There's a hole in the wall spot on Boston Street. Charming Elephant. It's Laan food. They're, it's so inconspicuous in the front, but you go in and it's another family run restaurant. Awesome. Awesome food. Um, if you want more like Pub Grub, Hutch Street, Stackhouse, they have like 80 beers on tap. Um, I'm trying to think where else do I really like Snake Hill, which is over in Highland Town. Oh. But it's a short walk right off Patterson Park, just across. They're awesome. From Canton. Just across from Canton. They're awesome. They like handmake their own sausages. It's a very, very cool vibe. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Um, and then, you know, I'll think of more, but those are the ones off the top of my head than I can really, than I can think of.
Speaker 4 00:09:41 I love sitting at the bar at Snake Hill with a, it's like a Scrabble, right? Bar top. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. That's cool. Yeah. That's very cool.
Speaker 3 00:09:49 I'm very simple. I like the Chick-fil-A and the
Speaker 2 00:09:52 Outbacks.
Speaker 4 00:09:54 Nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with the bloom and onion, honestly. Oh, yes. Who doesn't love that?
Speaker 2 00:10:00 I had lived in Canton since 95, and that Outbacks Outback's been around for a while. It used to be a bookstore there. Um, Barnes and no, uh, porters Porters Borders bookstore.
Speaker 1 00:10:09 That was the only other one I know. Well,
Speaker 2 00:10:10 It used to be, uh, kiss Cafe too. Uh, part of it was Kiss Cafe and then they turned it into bookstore. I, I can't remember which one was first. Um, but I never been to an Outback, and I had some friends, Hey, you know, come meet us out the Outback out the, you know, out the Outback. I was like, maybe I'll meet you at Flemings. You know, they're like, shut up and meet us at Outback <laugh>. And I was like, the food's pretty good. Like your,
Speaker 1 00:10:33 What's, what was your, what was your take on I
Speaker 2 00:10:36 The blooming gun is great. Uh, my wife literally last week took me to, um, the Olive Garden for the first time. Okay. And
Speaker 1 00:10:45 Then how much salad did
Speaker 2 00:10:46 You eat? When we were down in, uh, Florida, I went to a Chili's. So all I need is Applebee's. I love
Speaker 1 00:10:50 Chili's. I
Speaker 2 00:10:51 Love Chili's. It was good. It was, you know, it was, yeah. You know, it wasn't, you know, wasn't what we're used to here in Ken. Yeah.
Speaker 1 00:10:58 You need to do Ruby Tuesdays and TJ Fridays. And I think that's the thing. You complete the circle
Speaker 2 00:11:04 <laugh>. Yeah. The, the Circle of Life. Mm-hmm.
Speaker 1 00:11:07 <affirmative> or do Texas Roadhouse on your birthday and then they make you saddle up.
Speaker 4 00:11:10 Oh, there. Which is so embarrassing. Yeah. We need, um, video footage of that. Mm-hmm. <affirmative> for
Speaker 2 00:11:15 Sure. So, um, Nally Fresh is a
Speaker 4 00:11:18 Oh
Speaker 2 00:11:18 Yeah. Lunch
Speaker 4 00:11:19 Spot. Right. Can't forget about Nally Fresh. Get
Speaker 2 00:11:21 That quick, quick, uh, fast casual
Speaker 4 00:11:23 Salad. And I think there's an and Pizza Waters now too, in that same
Speaker 1 00:11:27 Yeah. There's ATT Waters and Canton Crossing too. Oh yeah. They're good. They're local Baltimore chain. They have great sandwiches, great salads, good breakfast. Yeah. Everything they make is from scratch. Even Breads. Um, yeah. Really, really good.
Speaker 2 00:11:39 Another episode, uh, we'll talk about everything in Fells Point. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>, uh, a lot of the places in Fells you can get to pretty easily from Canton. Mm-hmm. <affirmative>. Yeah. So they are, um, kind of similar, but so rusher, Nick, Caitlin, myself, we're real estate agents. Our office is based out of Fells Point. We, um, live work and in and out of Canton all day long. So if you wanna explore Canton or any of the surrounding neighborhoods, please reach out. Our information is in this, uh, video post. Take care. See you next episode.
